Which yarn works on a knitting machine?

Fine yarns are ideal for most home knitting machines with a standard needle bed. As a rule of thumb: the more meters per 100 g, the more smoothly the yarn runs through the carriage. In this collection, you’ll mostly find yarns with 600 to 1,000 m per 100 g – with alpaca, mohair, wool, and viscose – plus a few medium-weight yarns for denser pieces.

Single or double strand

You can use very fine yarns on their own for light, almost sheer fabric, or knit two strands together for a denser look. Pairing them with a second yarn in a different color is also popular on the machine.

Tips for getting started

Knit a gauge swatch before every project and set the tension to suit the yarn. Mohair and fluffy yarns run best with slightly looser tension. You’ll find more fine yarns in our Mohair Wool collection.
