What makes lace yarn special
Lace yarn – also called lace-weight yarn or lace wool – is especially thin: 100 g gives you 600 m or more. A little yarn makes large, light pieces, and lace patterns look airy and crisp.
Our lace yarns
From 600 to 1,000 m per 100 g: with mohair or kid mohair for a soft halo, with virgin wool or wool for crisp stitches, with alpaca for extra warmth, and with a little elastane for close-fitting pieces. Depending on the yarn, you knit on needle sizes from 1.5 to 5 mm.
Held double or as a carry-along strand
You can also knit lace yarn held double or pair it with a thicker yarn as a carry-along strand. A strand of mohair then adds a delicate halo to every stitch. Our guide Which Yarn for Needle Sizes 5, 6, and 8? shows how this changes the needle size.
Care
Hand wash at 30 °C, do not wring, dry flat. Block a finished shawl while it’s still damp after washing – that’s how the lace patterns open up best.
You’ll find slightly thicker fuzzy yarns in our Mohair Wool collection.
Frequently asked questions
What is lace yarn?
Lace yarn is a very thin yarn with 600 m or more per 100 g. It’s great for shawls, stoles, scarves, and light tops with lace patterns.
How much lace yarn do I need for a scarf?
For a scarf of about 20 × 180 cm, you need 800–1,000 m – one to two balls, depending on the yarn. You’ll find a guide value for each yarn under “Yarn requirements.”
Can I knit lace yarn together with another yarn?
Yes. Held together with a thicker yarn as a carry-along strand, lace yarn with mohair gives your fabric a soft halo. Plan on a needle about 0.5 to 1 mm larger than for the main yarn alone.
