Collection: Alpaca Wool & Blended Yarns with Alpaca

Alpaca keeps you warm in a different way than sheep’s wool: the fiber is hollow inside and holds in warmth without getting heavy. A sweater made from it feels light on your shoulders – and still keeps you warm all winter.

Why alpaca feels so soft

Alpaca fibers have scales too, but they lie flatter and are lower than those of sheep’s wool. That makes the fiber feel smoother, and many people find it less scratchy. On top of that, alpaca contains virtually no lanolin. How a yarn feels on your skin still depends on the fiber fineness, the blend, and your own skin – you’ll find the exact alpaca content listed with each yarn.

Our alpaca yarns

From chunky to very fine: 120 m per 100 g for blankets and quick projects, up to 800 m for fine shawls. In between are heathered yarns, tweed, bouclé, gradient yarn, and a yarn with glitter. All from Italy, all in 100 g balls.

The yarns with baby alpaca are especially fine – a fineness grade that feels noticeably softer than regular alpaca fiber. You’ll find them all in our Baby Alpaca Wool collection.

Care

Hand wash alpaca at 30 °C, dry it flat, and don’t wring it. Because the fiber repels dirt, simply airing it out is often enough between washes.

Whether alpaca itches, what “baby alpaca” really means, and how best to knit with the fiber – it’s all in our guide Alpaca Wool: Properties, Benefits, and Knitting Tips.

If you like it even airier, you’ll find lighter yarns in our Mohair Wool collection.

How do I wash alpaca wool?

Hand wash at up to 30 °C with a mild wool detergent, do not rub or wring, dry flat. You’ll find the exact care instructions listed with each yarn.

Why is alpaca so warm?
